Why I finally cancelled my UOB One Credit Card

Image
I've been using the UOB One credit card for a long time - I remember using it to pay for my house reno in 2020. At that time I was consistently making quite a few large purchases so I could hit the 2k minimum spend in order to get 5% off. I think CardUp was also still accepting it at the time so I am pretty sure I used it to pay for my house mortgage as well. Then CardUp spends became ineligible so I cancelled it for the first time because I could only hit the lower tiers that gave 3.33%. Also there were other cards like DBS Live Fresh that gave higher cashback anyway.  Fast-forward to 2022 or so, there were promos and during covid + wars the banks increased their interest rates and I signed up for the UOB One high interest savings account and got the UOB One card together with it. And that marked the start of my kind-of-annoying experience with the card. 1. I misread "statement month" as "calendar month", and missed out on the first quarter's cashback. Cons...

Cashback Hacks (Online Groceries)

Sharing my collation of cashback-earning techniques/hacks. Note that I am not a high spender so these hacks are more suitable for middle-income earners and some might even be suitable for lower-income earners. I settle the bills for my whole household and sometimes my parents as well so I am able to meet some of the credit card spending limits for most months. Online Groceries (Fairprice, Giant, Redmart, Shopee) Live Fresh DBS card (5% Online Spend Category) + Shopback (Cashback) I do not purchase Shopback vouchers if I want to hit the minimum spending for my Live Fresh card. (I doubt Shopback voucher spending is eligible for Live Fresh card's 5% cashback, but please let me know if you have tried and got cashback!) Eg. I paid $61.17 worth of groceries from (Fairprice Online) with my Live Fresh card and got 5% credit card cashback and additional $1.58 cashback from Shopback. So total cashback is $4.64. That's 7.59% of my total spending. UOB x Amex Absolute (1.7%) + Shopback (Vou...

Card hacks gone wrong

I'm making a mountain out of a molehill but I really do get pissed off by card exclusions! And hence the overexxaggerated post title.  I've been using credit cards, Youtrip and grabpay card for quite awhile, mostly credit cards. But my grab platinum account is going to be downgraded at the end of this year if I don't chalk up enough points, so I was finding ways to hit the point requirements. Saw on hardware zone that I could use my grabpay card on public transport, so that was what I did. But lo and behold, bus and mrt are excluded from earning points! So sad... But at least I know now, so I would like to share the other exclusions here as well: 1. Paypal (yep I wanted to link my grabpay card to PayPal too; since there r merchants that accept PayPal; but apparently it's excluded...There is a difference between topping up and paying to merchant via PayPal, but on Grab's website it doesn't differentiate, so I didn't want to take the risk.)  2. Ez-link transac...

Which flat rate cash back card should you get?

I got credit cards once my salary allowed me to (which I don’t recommend because you sort of miss out on the first-timer promos if you have nothing much to spend on), so I’m here to share some experience. I did my fair share of research using finance websites such as moneysmart, singsaver etc, and this is my very own simplified version; finance websites are very complete and thorough, but sometimes because they compare just too many cards, it gets a bit difficult to finally make the decision...(But I do recommend you read them too because they are still really useful.) So here comes the disclaimer: I am NOT a financial advisor. I just want to share my experience and help others avoid the mistakes I did. Actually the aim is to get EVERY card that suits your lifestyle, not just one or two. But when you get those cards, try to get the welcome gifts as well. Because once you sign up for one bank’s card, you won’t be able to get the welcome gift for a different card from the same bank. Some...

Adulting

Busy busy week today because I got called into my ad-hoc work almost every day this week, so that's about 12h of work each day minus the travelling time, which is not a lot from one place to the other cuz I just Grab or Gojek (whichever is cheaper). I get 3% cashback (first 6 months, 1.5% after) from using Amex True Cashback credit card. Really like this card because there is no minimum spending and they let you get cashback from topping-up online wallets UNLIKE posb everyday card and Citibank SMRT card (at most only 0.3% cashback for topping up). Previously I was using the Standard Chartered Unlimited Cashback credit card which has the same rules as the Amex card (1.5% cashback only though), but since I had to spend at least $500 on getting air tickets for my jaan, I applied for the Amex card via Moneysmart as they had a promo that gave $80 (giro into bank- I got it after about a month) and $60 Capitaland mall vouchers (they will mail you a letter telling you to redeem from specif...
